Concrete Repair

Steel reinforcement in good quality concrete is normally protected by a ‘passive film’ produced by the alkaline conditions generated by the hydrated cement.

Corrosion of reinforcing steel may occur specifically in concrete structures which are:
  • Exposed to the atmosphere
  • Manufactured with chloride based admixtures
  • Located in industrial areas
  • Manufactured with salt contaminated water, sand or aggregate
  • Located in a salt water environment

Concrete repair is almost always required when the steel reinforcing within the concrete structure reacts in the presence of water and rust begins to form, which can expand over five times the diameter of the reinforcing strand.

The result is a build up of pressure that causes even the strongest to crack and eventually fall away.

Wherever steel exists in concrete there is always the potential for concrete spalling

Extensive concrete and structural repairs required to the asset of Owners Corporation is no problem when Consolidated is providing the expertise and experience.
Corroded steel reinforcement exposed and cleaned on the underside of stair flights.

The steel has been treated and the structure is ready for reinstatement with repair mortar.
Steel balustrade posts embedded in a concrete balcony will eventually corrode and spall the concrete. If the corrosion is left unattended the ultimate result may also be the need to replace the entire balustrade. This can be avoided by chemical pressure injection if treated early enough.

Workface Access Is Where Building Repairs Starts

Consolidated provides its own scaffolding and swing stages to gain access for façade refurbishment. Cost savings are passed onto the client.

MAGNESITE - PROBLEM

Owners Corporations are faced with
the all too common problem of concrete
repair resulting from home units affected
by Magnesite.

Magnesite was used extensively as a
floor levelling material and to provide
sound insulation. However when Magnesite
absorbs water a corrosive mixture is formed
which reacts with the covering layer of concrete.

Consolidated

Undertakes major repairs of unit blocks. This
work requires investigation, break-out and
concrete repair.
